Menstrual Hygiene Workshops at Faridabad
Just before sunrise hit the city, 3 women located in 3 different parts of the NCR hit their alarms. One may wonder why these women were getting out of bed hours before they usually do on any normal work day, but today was no ordinary day. It was the day that these women would set out to make a difference, a change that could alter the generations to come.
But making this specific change is not something easy, for it seeks to alter and improve the current situation of Menstrual Hygiene Management. Project Baala does so by holding Awareness Workshops, not just for menstruators, but also for their allies, thereby creating a wholesome and inclusive environment that encourages dialogue and open communication.
In this vein, those 3 women set out to hold workshops in 10 schools across Ballabgarh, Faridabad. Aimed at young girls, the workshops covered several essential topics including an overview of menstruation, how to handle pain, the importance of good hygiene, when to see a doctor, how disposable menstruation products contribute to pollution and the Baala pads. Each workshop would end with a Q&A session, where the participants were encouraged to clear doubts.
Just as with most things in life, you can try as hard as possible to account for all eventualities, but sometimes you are still handed a curve-ball. The same is true for the development sector too. Team members are trained to be able to handle all situations, but the field always throws up something unexpected. This could range from anything like girls being unresponsive to all the ice breakers, hesitancy to answer questions and engage, to even girls who want to access information that should only be shared by a registered medical practitioner.
In Faridabad, however, the workshops were held with much success after the girls warmed up to the team. In several instances, the girls were already aware about some of the topics the workshop covered which made the process even more streamlined. While the NCR experienced a heatwave, the heat and humidity did not dull the energy and eagerness of the girls. What made the experience even more wholesome was to see the teachers actively participate too!
Between the nervous giggles and the enthusiastic responses, a bond quickly formed between the participants and the didis leading the workshop, making it enjoyable for all!
